How to read it.

1

Find the reference line

It's the horizontal line every symbol attaches to. The arrow at one end points to the actual joint on the part.

2

Check above or below the line

A symbol sitting below the line means weld the arrow (near) side. A symbol sitting above means weld the far side. Symbols on both sides mean weld both.

3

Read size, then length

Size - leg length, depth, or diameter - sits to the left of the symbol. Length sits to the right. No length given means the weld runs the full joint.

4

Look for the tail

A forked tail at the end of the reference line calls out a welding process, code, or note - like "GMAW" or a reference to a specific AWS D1.1 clause.

Common questions.

The reference line is the horizontal backbone of every weld symbol. Symbols placed below it apply to the near (arrow) side of the joint. Symbols placed above it apply to the far (other) side.
A fillet weld symbol is a right triangle attached to the reference line, used for corner and T-joints. Groove symbols vary by joint prep - square, V, bevel, U, J, flare-V, and flare-bevel - and are used for butt joints where the base metal edges are shaped before welding.
Size is shown to the left of the symbol (weld leg size or depth), and length is shown to the right (the length of the weld along the joint). If no length is given, the weld runs the full length of the joint.
Yes. Every symbol on this page and in the app follows AWS A2.4 standard symbols for welding, brazing, and nondestructive examination.
